Day Hiking Checklist: What to bring?

Are you preparing for your next hiking adventure? You must pack all the essentials. If you miss any, you are in trouble. Day Hiking checklist for you! How far you want to hike? With whom you are hiking? What is the weather forecast? Considering all these questions you should pack.

Clothing & Footwear

  • Backpacks & bags
  • Moisture-wicking underwear
  • Moisture-wicking T-shirt
  • Quick-drying pants/shorts
  • Long-sleeve shirt (for sun, bugs) 
  • Lightweight fleece or jacket
  • Boots or shoes suited to the terrain
  • Socks (synthetic or wool)
  • Gaiters
  • Extra clothes * (beyond the minimum expectation)

Additional items for rainy and/or cold weather:

  • Rainwear (jacket and pants)
  • Long underwear
  • Warm, insulated jacket or vest
  • Fleece pants
  • Gloves or mittens
  • Warm hat

Food & Water

  • Water bottles and/or reservoir 
  • Water filter/purifier or chemical treatment 
  • Trail snacks
  • Lunch
  • Extra day’s supply of food

  • Map
  • Compass
  • Altimeter watch 
  • GPS 
  • Satellite messenger/personal locator beacon 

Emergency & First Aid

  • First-aid kit or first-aid supplies 
  • Lighter/matches and fire starter 
  • Emergency shelter 
  • Whistle

Health & Hygiene

  • Hand sanitizer
  • Menstrual products
  • Prescription medications
  • Sunglasses
  • Sun hat
  • Hydration bladder
  • Water purifier
  • Tissues
  • Hygienic Wipes

Optional:

  • Toilet paper
  • Alcohol or antiseptic wipes
  • Insect repellent 

Day Hiking Extras

  • Headlamp or flashlight * (with extra batteries)
  • Camera
  • An interpretive field guide(s)
  • Outdoor journal with pen/pencil
  • Binoculars
  • Two-way radios

Personal Items

  • Credit card and/or cash
  • ID
  • Cellphone
